Beware Diet Fads

A number of fashionable trends in diet are actually very dangerous. The idea of a low fat diet and a low carbohydrate diet is very dangerous. The brain is composed in large part by fats and brain cells require glucose to function, a major source of glucose is carbohydrates. Vegetarian sources of fat are various oils such as coconut oil and olive oil. Also nuts are a source of vegetarian fat.

The way to prevent any potentially harmful affects of fat is by eating raw a raw garlic clove. Raw garlic helps to unclog the arteries. Raw garlic also is good for unclogging the colon. In ancient greek medicine there is a saying that constipation is the mother of all diseases.

Another dangerous diet fad is the notion that salt is bad. Sodium is essential to live and salt that is unrefined and natural(most table salt is refined salt) is also a source of trace minerals. Salt only becomes harmful if one does not drink water. Without salt people die. Some have alleged that salt helps people feel grounded.

Fat, salt, and carbs are healthy.

    Yogic scriptures tend to recommend not eating garlic or salt. Wutchu think?

    • I have heard yogic scriptures say that garlic can contribute to lust. My guess is this would have to do with garlics properties of enhancing blood flow due to clearing stuff out of ones veins. But If one has control over ones emotions one is not going to become lusty from eating garlic. As far as salt is concerned I have not read anything in yogic scriptures about that. What did you read?

        From “Practice of Brahmacharya” by Swami Sivananda;

        “Highly seasoned dishes, hot curries, Chutnies, chillies, meat, fish, eggs, tobacco, liquor, sour articles, oil of all kinds, garlic, onions, bitter things, sour curd, stale food, acids, astringents, pungent stuffs, roasted things, over-ripe and unripe fruits, heavy vegetables and salt are not at all beneficial. Onions and garlic are worse than meat.

        Salt is the worst enemy. Too much salt excites passion. Even if you do not take salt separately, the system will derive the necessary quantity of salt from other foodstuffs. All foodstuffs contain salt. Giving up of salt helps you in controlling the tongue and thereby the mind and all the other Indriyas.”

        The question of diet and spirituality interests me greatly. To me vegetarian diet is the final word, but I know of something of spiritual advancement who has some meat. And I think Ramakrishna ate fish. So I don’t know what to think.

    garlic also has the ability to repel biting pests such as ticks and mosquitos. nature gives countless ways towards enriching our lives and promoting good health. apparently even hot peppers are good for arthritis. may you live long and prosperous lives and may you find joy in prostrating yourself before creation.
